IMR Successfully Hosted Second (online) Summer School

From July 6th to 10th, 2020, the Second (Online) Summer School of the Institute of Medical Robotics (IMR) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was successfully held online on the ZOOM platform. This summer school is sponsored by IMR, drawing a total of 135 postgraduates and senior undergraduates from top universities of eight countries to attend online courses. Thirty students from Harvard University, Imperial College London, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Manchester, University of Toronto, Zhejiang University, Technical University of Munich, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Royal Institute of Technology, Special Winter University, Tongji University, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Nankai University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, South China University of Technology, Southeast University, University of Texas at Dallas, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other universities were divided into 6 groups to conduct programming assignments and display them online.

This online Summer School is presided online by Professor Le Xie, Assistant Dean of IMR. On July 6, Professor Guang-Zhong Yang, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Dean of IMR@SJTU, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Professor Yang warmly welcomed the participation of all teachers and students, and hoped that the students of this year will discuss and promote each other, grasp the opportunity of close contact with well-known experts and scholars in the industry, and look forward to the future development of medical robotics with a higher and broader perspective, and truly understand the mission of stepping on the scientific research road of medical robotics,  to create sustainable development value for China and the world.

Professor Dong-Soo Kwon, Director of the Center for Future Medical Robotics of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Founder CEO of EasyEndo Surgical Inc., gave a lecture online

The five-day summer school contains programming collaboration and expert lectures. Professors and experts from first-class universities over the world interpreted intelligent robots from macro to micro perspective, discussed robotics and imaging technologies in healthcare, paid close attention to the image and data conversion of surgical robots, combined actual operation cases in hospitals, and organized students in groups to carry out programming tasks, involving basic research, clinical application and industrial transformation of medical robotics.

The first phase of the “NeoBay Robotics Forum” was just during the Summer School. NRF is a new academic platform launched by IMR, aiming to interpret robotic exploration and research, and to lead the cutting-edge direction. The Forum will be held irregularly every year, including high-end academic reports, Science Robotics paper interpretation, experts’ insights, elite exchanges and other activities. On July 10, the students of the Summer School participated in the NRF’s first phase, listened to the reports of Professor Guang-Zhong Yang and Associate Professor Li Zhang (the author of the Science Robotics paper), and conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on the issues in the report.

Professor Guang-Zhong Yang, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Dean of IMR@SJTU, delivered an academic report at the NeoBay Robotics Forum

Associate Professor Zhang Li from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong, delivered an academic report at the NeoBay Robotics Forum

All the teachers and students of this Summer School gathered online to learn and discuss the smart, inclusive, and win-win medical robotic technology, exchanged information and knowledge, explored the development path of future research, which fully demonstrated that the industry pioneers attached great importance to this Summer School, and we could feel the enthusiasm and expectations of young scholars for medical robotics. This Summer School is significant to promote IMR’s international exchange and development.
