Intelligent Diagnostic and Therapeutic Devices for Minimally Invasive Robotics Surgery

Biography:

Hongen Liao is Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, China. He received his Ph.D. degrees in biomedical precision engineer- ing from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan in 2003. He was a Research Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). From 2004, he was a faculty member at the Graduate School of Engi- neering, The University of Tokyo, where he became an Associate Professor in 2007. He has been selected as National “Thousand Talents” Distinguished Professor, National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, China since 2010. He is Director and Founder of the Advanced Theranostics and 3-D Imaging Laboratory, Tsinghua University. Professor Liao’ s research interests include 3D medical image, image-guided surgery, medical robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and fusion of these innova- tive healthcare technologies for minimally invasive precision diagnosis and therapy. He has also been involved in long viewing distance autostereoscopic display and 3D visualization. He is the author and co-author of more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and proceedings papers, as well as over 40 patents, 290 abstracts and numerous invited lectures. Dr. Liao was distinguished by receiving multiple govern- ment awards and various Best Paper Awards from different academic societies. Prof. Liao is an Associ- ate Editor of IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference, the General Chair, Pro- gram Chair and Organization Chair of multiple international conferences including MIAR, MICCAI, and ACCAS. He is a President of Asian Society for Computer Aided Surgery and Co-chair of Asian-Pacific Activities Working Group, International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering.
 

Abstract:

In recent years, intelligent and precise minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment has become one of the main trends of clinical medical development. How to improve the accuracy and efficiency of surgical diagnosis and treatment has become a major challenge for clinicians? Development of novel diagnostic and treatment techniques will be helpful for integrating minimally invasive treatment into an intelligent medical system. A large number of relevant pieces of research integrated mechanics, informatics, elec- tronics and medical sciences have been carried out and are highly applicable to tumor diagnosis and therapy. These procedures include medical image/information assisted robotics surgery and minimally invasive intervention, and make surgery safer, less invasive and more effective. We have carried out intelligent medical image analysis to guide precision medical treatment in different medical applications such as cardiovascular, orthopedics, and neurosurgery. Our goals expect break through the traditional concept of minimally invasive robotics surgery, open up a new field of minimally invasive high-precision diagnosis and treatment.
