Grand Challenges: Science for Robotics and Robotics for Science

Professor Guang-Zhong Yang

As the founding editor of Science Robotics, Prof.  Yang will discuss the Grand Challenges of Science Robotics and its implication on the future development of basic science research as well as industrialization of robotics. The talk will highlight the role of new materials and fabrication schemes for developing a new generation of robots that are multi-functional, power-efficient, compliant, and autonomous in ways akin to biological organisms, as well as biohybrid and bioinspired robots. The talk will use robotic surgery as an exemplar to provide a critical analysis of existing surgical robots for minimally invasive surgery and new research opportunities in allied disciplines. The talk will cover the latest developments in fully articulated, bio-inspired robot platforms that facilitate intra-luminal or extra-luminal anatomical navigation with integrated sensing, vision and navigation.

Professor Guang-Zhong Yang (FREng, FIEEE, FIET, FAIMBE) is the founding Dean of the Institute of Medical Robotics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prior to returning to Shanghai, he was the director and co-founder of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London and Chairman of the UK-RAS (Robotics and Autonomous Systems) Network. Professor Yang is internationally renowned for his contribution to robotics and he is the founding editor of Science Robotics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, fellow of IEEE, IET, AIMBE, IAMBE, MICCAI and CGI. He was a recipient of the Royal Society Research Merit Award and listed in The Times Eureka ‘Top 100’ in British Science. He was honoured CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2017.
