SJTU's Institute of Medical Robotics and School of Design Successfully Hosted 2019 Global Innovation Design Competition of Medical Robotics

From December 9 to 11, 2019, the final of 2019 Global Innovation Design Competition of Medical Robotics was successfully held in the Translational Medicine Building, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The competition is sponsored by SJTU’s Institute of Medical Robotics and School of Design, under the guidance of Shanghai Minhang Science and Technology Committee and Robot Competition Committee of Chinese Society of Automation, and in cooperation with Shanghai Nanbinjiang Investment Development Co., Ltd. It aims to discover outstanding works with advanced technology and novel designs, and provide opportunities for further cultivation and industrial transformation for these works. The Global Innovation Design Competition attracted 53 teams from China, Singapore, the United States, Italy and other countries in the early stage, and more than 260 competitors participated. Eleven teams were selected to enter the final after the qualifier.

 

 

Review

On the afternoon of December 9, the defense and expert review of the 11 teams that entered the final were held in the E200 Conference Room on the second floor of the Translational Medicine Building, Minhang Campus, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Bo Wang, Secretary-General of Shanghai Medical Innovation and Development Foundation and Vice Chairman of Shanghai Medical Quality Research Center, Guan Tao (representative), President of Fosun Group Star Future Capital, Steve May-Russell, CEO of SMALLFRY, Cyrill vonTiesenhuasen, Manager of medical robot business development department of KUKA Roboter GmbH, and Han Ting, Deputy Dean of the School of Design of SJTU, were invited to serve as members of the jury. Before the formal review, Guang-Zhong Yang, Founding Dean of the Institute of Medical Robotics, Weidong Chen, Executive Vice Dean, and Xu Zhao, Assistant Dean, introduced the situation of the competition to the review experts.

 

 

On-site defense and demonstration

The representatives of the participating teams introduced their works to the judges in detail from the background, core technologies, innovations, patents and awards, and demonstrated them on site. The judges asked questions and the participating groups responded. Some judges personally experienced the functions of the entries. It was a lively discussion.

Review and resolution

After more than two hours of on-site defense and demonstration, the evaluation experts conducted the final evaluation and decision in the E200 Conference Room. After nearly an hour of discussion, the experts finally confirmed the final list of winners.

 

 

Awarding

On the morning of the 10th, the opening ceremony of the 2019 International Academic Forum of IMR@SJTU was held in the Translational Medicine Building. The awarding ceremony of the Global Innovation Design Competition of Medical Robotics was also held at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Bo Ji, Secretary of the School of Biomedical Engineering. Dajin Luo, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Lifeng Xi, Vice President of SJTU, and Bin Wu, Deputy Head of Minhang District, delivered opening speeches. Vice President Weidong Chen announced the winners of the competition. Academician Tu Yongqiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, school leaders, hospital representatives, business representatives and experts from the International Academic Committee of IMR attended the opening ceremony.

 

Leader's speech

On behalf of SJTU, Vice President Lifeng Xi first expressed his sincere welcome to the guests. He highly affirmed the achievements of IMR in the past year and had high hopes for the future development of the Institute.

 

 

Bin Wu, Deputy Head of Minhang District, expressed his joy, gratitude and congratulations on the achievements of the institute since its establishment.

 

 

Dajin Luo, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, explained the background of the technology and industrial development of medical robotics, and congratulated the institute for the remarkable achievements in recent years.

 

 

Award ceremony

The award ceremony was presided over by Weidong Chen, Executive Vice President of IMR@SJTU. Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang delivered his speech at the award ceremony. Prof. Yang expressed his gratitude to all the leaders and guests for coming, and introduced the purpose and significance of the competition held by the Institute.

 

 

After watching the promotional video of the competition, Vice President Weidong Chen announced the list of winners of the competition.

 

List of winning awards: Spine puncture surgery robot system based on teleoperation parallel mechanism (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), "Jiaolong" smart wheelchair (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), and Smart robot nursing bed (Shanghai University of Science and Technology);

Hao Hu, Director of the Standing Committee of SJTU’s Party Committee, Hongkai Chen, Director of the Innovation Service Division of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and Jianyuan Yu, Chairman of Nanbinjiang Investment Development Co., Ltd., presented the awards to the individual award winning team representatives.

Dexiu Ma, former Party Secretary of SJTU, presented the award to representatives of the gold award winning team.

 

 

Finally, Vice President Weidong Chen congratulated the winning teams, and expressed sincere gratitude to leaders, contestants and units who supported this competition, and hoped the next global innovation design competition would be even more exciting. Then the final of the 2019 Global Innovation Design Competition of Medical Robotics have come to a successful conclusion.
